Specifications for the new BYD Atto 8 (Sealion 8) electric vehicle have emerged in China following recent regulatory filings with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). Locally, Chinese consumers know the model as the Tang L to distinguish it from the brand’s larger SUVs
The vehicle measures 5,045 mm long, 1,980 mm wide, and up to 1,760 mm tall, riding on a 2,950 mm wheelbase. It features a front and rear track of 1,700 mm, an approach angle of 18 degrees, and a departure angle of 21 degrees. These final dimensions match the look seen during early road testing of the next-generation prototype.
Powertrain and performance
The new model uses a single permanent-magnet synchronous motor that delivers a peak output of 300 kW and a continuous rated power of 150 kW. This setup expands the lineup by joining the high-performance dual-motor Tang L flagship, which launched in 2025 with up to 1,086 hp. The lower-power setup allows the SUV to reach a top speed of 250 km/h.
Compared to the 2025 single-motor model, this new variant sees a drop in power alongside slightly altered dimensions. Output drops from 500 kW (671 hp) to 300 kW (402 hp), a reduction of 269 hp. While keeping the exact same 2,950 mm wheelbase, the body is 5 mm longer at 5,045 mm and 16 mm narrower at 1,980 mm. Braking is handled by an IPB hydraulic brake system supplied by FinDreams Power, and standard equipment includes a built-in event data recorder to meet local safety regulations. Power is entirely from lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) cells sourced from BYD’s battery divisions.
Weights and options
The filings outline two curb weight classes based on seating layout and driver-assistance features. The heavier version ranges from 2,390 kg to 2,480 kg and offers five- or seven-seat interior arrangements. This configuration uses battery cells built in Wuwei, with final pack assembly handled by a FinDreams plant in Zhengzhou.
The lighter five-seat trim has a curb weight of 2,195 kg and drops the roof-mounted LiDAR sensors. Its battery cells come from a facility in Hefei, with pack integration handled in Shanwei. Customisation options include high-gloss black door panels, different roof colours, and various aerodynamic wheel designs.
Market and strategy
The launch of this entry-level model follows previous international releases for the vehicle lineup. BYD previously introduced the hybrid version in South America with pricing starting at 74,200 USD. This lower-spec model provides a more affordable option to attract a wider range of buyers while premium versions adapt to market conditions.
Local sales data highlights a clear need for a refreshed lineup. According to China EV DataTracker, monthly deliveries of the premium Tang L variant fell from 4,249 units in July 2025 and 3,338 units in December 2025 to just 616 units in May 2026. June 2026 data showed a slight bump to 629 units, securing a tiny 0.3% market share, underscoring why BYD is introducing this new single-motor version now.
